Sussex Development to Use River to Heat Homes

arryawke

A new housing development in Lewes, East Sussex, will heat its 416 properties using water source heat pumps to take heat from the River Ouse.

The district heating scheme is part of the North Street Quarter development and could lower residents’ heating bills by as much as 20% if they have been using a gas boiler, according to the developers, The Santon Group and MAS Real Estate Inc.

The heat network scheme is a first for Sussex and its look set to be one of the most sustainable developments in the region. The River Ouse has a steady temperature of between 7 degrees C and 10 degrees C year round. This enables the heat pumps to increase the water temperature enough to provide good amounts of heat and hot water for the residents.

The North Street Quarter site follows in the footsteps of the award-winning Kingston Heights projects, which takes heat from the Thames, also using Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps to provide heat and hot water for several hundred homes and offices.
