Insurance price comparison website GoCompare provided a sobering insight into the problems householders can face when they improve their homes. It warned that homeowners could invalidate their insurance with their home improvements.
Home improvements such as fiiting a new bathroom or kitchen remain at the top of the list. However, 49% of homeowners admitted to not letting their insurance companies know about the major improvements. Forgetting to update their insurance company could undermine their cover.
Heating engineers will find comfort in the fact that fitting a new boiler or central heating system is number three on the list. Renewable energy also makes an appearance with fitting solar panels at number seven.
Here are the top ten most popular home improvements within the last 3 years according to the survey:
Fitted a new bathroom (44%)
Installed a new kitchen (39%)
Fitted a new boiler or central heating system (33%)
A garden makeover (28%)
Built an extension (16%)
Knocked through rooms (11%)
Fitted solar panels (11%)
An attic conversion (10%)
Added an extra bedroom (7%)
A cellar conversion (6%)
"Most home insurance policies don't cover tradesmen or their work,” said Gocompare.com Home Insurance spokesman, Ben Wilson.
“You should always check that they have their own insurance in place. It's also wise to check that they are qualified to carry out the work and registered with a recognised governing body."
