Natural Cooling Choice for Scottish Seafood Processor

Scottish seafood processor, Pinneys, now has an ammonia-based cooling system, Star Refrigeration announced recently.
Pinneys, a division of Young’s Seafood, processes Scottish smoked salmon and needs reliable, efficient cooling in its processing plant in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway.
Previously, the company’s cooling system used synthetic R22 for chilling, freezing and cold storage. With the EU regulations phasing out R22, Pinneys needed a plan to deal with the changes while maintaining its operations.
A big part of the R22 phase out plan involved converting a coldstore where it keeps products at -25C before processing. The cooling came from two old R22 refrigeration systems in two separate plant rooms.
Star’s solution was their Azanefreezer system, which is an air-cooled, ammonia refrigeration plant, ideal for cold storage. The solutions uses a low charge of natural refrigerant ammonia and has a low-pressure receiver and high efficiency EC condenser fan control technology.
Pinneys benefit from the Azanefreezer being 20% more efficient than refrigeration plant using HFC refrigerant. In addition, the solution does not need a plant room.
It is the first ammonia-based refrigeration system installed at the Annan site. The low refrigerant charge was an important reason for choosing the system as opposed to other refrigeration systems using ammonia.
